Memories of Matthew

Created by Fiona one year ago
I have so many good memories of Matthew because Sandra and I left work at the same time to bring up our boys and had many fun get togethers over the years. It was fun for us and fun for the children whether we met in each other's living rooms or gardens or the swimming pool or park. And, of course, there were the birthday parties  ---- Matthew's being particularly special as there were fireworks.
My favourite memories of Matthew often include a book. Where other children might carry a favourite toy, Matthew would carry a book. His tastes were eclectic and he was never afraid of trying something difficult or challenging. He would read a play as easily as a novel and loved Shakespeare from an early age. So it was not a surprise that he chose to study English literature and did so well. And, of course, as he grew older, it was always a pleasure to chat to him and see what he was reading and what his thoughts on it were. As others have commented, Matthew brought a sensitivity beyond his years to his appreciation of literature. It became a pleasure to choose a book for his birthdays and Christmases.
The get togethers continued as the years went on and Matthew was often kind enough to join us if he was at home when the Ashcroft ladies met in Pimlico. He was not fazed by being the only male and his dry humour and courteous manner were a welcome addition to the table. We will miss you Matthew. xxx
