Steam Kettle Sympathy
Created by Tina 2 years ago
This story steps back to our Luton days when I would pop in after school to see the
affectionate and beautiful baby Matthew, and of course my dear friend Sandra and
Roger too if he was back from work. I do not think Matt was a toddler yet, but
he was definitely a crawler and a hauler of himself up the side of the armchair
so he could talk to you eye to eye. At my home, like a fool, I managed to badly
scald my wrist on the steam from a boiling kettle. It was very angry red and puffy
for a few weeks fading to a large red mark for a while after that.
On my first visit after this burn, Matt immediately spotted my red wrist and
holding it with both small hands he gazed intently at my burn, looked up at me
with huge liquid intelligent eyes and began to cross examine me.
Then he repeated back my story:
'Tina. Kettle. Naughty. (Then sucking air between his teeth indicating my pain). Hurt.'
This was interspersed with additions from me so it was a proper thoughtful
diagnostic conversation. This conversation was repeated and developed for most
of my visit.
Now, you may be wondering how I can report with such detail and such assurance a
story of Matt from the early 1980's. It is because this scenario and these
conversations were replayed for weeks and even a month or so later, in fact every time I visited on the way home from school. The sincerity, the empathy for my hurt, the concerned open little face, the genuine engagement with me
every time we met are fixed in my memory.
Also, of course, many people have spoken of Matt's sensitivity. This, I believe is an
early story demonstrating this thoughtful quality in Matt.
What a guy!
